The Mallorcan midwife toad is a cute little animal.
Sadly though, they are one of Europe's most endangered animals, and at Action For Earth, I try to focus on endangered animals and raise awareness about the endangered animals which get little to no attention.
This post will be dedicated to raising awareness about the Mallorcan midwife toad, and some facts about the cute animals.
Let's get started!
Where Are They Found?
These cute toads are found on the Spanish island of Majorca in the wild.
Where Do They Live?
In the wild, the Mallorcan midwife toad is found living in wetland ecosystems; they are found living in streams. They are also found in terrestrial limestone mountains. These toads are not found all over Majorca, they are only found in these specific ecosystems, which makes protecting their ecosystems more important.
What Is Their Conservation Status?
Sadly, they are an endangered species today. The Mallorcan midwife toad has been brought back from extinction before, however, they face extinction again and wildlife conservationists say time is running out for these wonderful animals.
What Is Their Population Trend?
There is good news though, as their population is increasing, that's according to the last IUCN Red List assessment of their population.
The last population assessment of the Mallorcan midwife toad was in April 2020, therefore, their population has been assessed fairly recently.
What Is Their Population?
The IUCN Red List estimates that there are only between 500 to 1,500 Mallorcan midwife toads remaining in the wild, this makes them one of Europe's and the world's most endangered species.
What Threats Do They Face?
These cute frogs sadly face many threats in the wild, which could cause their extinction. The threats that they face are - housing and development threats, droughts, dams and other human-related activities that could cause a further decline in these toads. Helping to resolve these issues and protecting them in the wild is important if they are going to be saved from extinction.
Time is running out for the Mallorcan midwife toad, but, they are still here, and we can save them from extinction. đ¸
