Amazon Rainforest Fires Increased By 20% In June, The Biggest Increase For 13 Years

Amazon rainforest forest fires have increased by 20% over June. This is a 13 year high for forest fires in the Amazon rainforest in June.

It is feared that this year could see a repeat of the forest fires seen in the Amazon rainforest last year. Though, some even think that the fires could get worse this year.

Last year, the Amazon rainforest fires were particularly bad. Last year's Amazon rainforest fires resulted in 40,000 forest fires and almost 1 million hectares being burned. The fires lasted for most of the year, from January to October, with international attention only being drawn to the fires in August of last year. This year seems to be no different, as the forest has been burning in June and increased significantly in June without little to no attention brought upon them.

This is a map of the current fires over the last 24 hours (the still of the picture was taken from (Global Forest Watch Fires). Information from Global Forest Watch Fires suggests that 15% of these fires were in 'protected areas' and 19% of the fires were in mining areas.
