African Savanna Elephants Are Now Endangered

African Savanna elephants are now an endangered species.


These beautiful animals have just been declared as an endangered species by the IUCN. African savanna elephants have been classed as an endangered species due to the dramatic decline in the African savanna elephant population over recent decades.


The African savanna elephant population has declined dramatically: they have declined by a massive 60% over the last few decades. The decline in these beautiful elephants has happened over the last 50 years.


There are two main reasons for the decline in African savanna elephants. These two reasons are poaching and habitat loss.


Habitat loss and poaching is also the reason why another elephant species - the African forest elephant - has been declining in recent decades too. The African forest elephant has recently been classed as a critically endangered species. It is estimated that the African forest elephant has seen an 86% decline in their population over the last 31 years. This is a worrying decline in their numbers.


The decline in African savanna elephants is also a worrying decline.

The population of African forest elephants and African savanna elephants combined is estimated to be around 415,000 elephants.


Where Are Savanna Elephants Found?


African savanna elephants are found in several different countries in Africa. Countries that they are found in include - Zambia, Kenya and South Africa. African savanna elephants are found in just over 20 different African countries.


What Is Their Habitat?


African savanna elephants are found in savannas, they are also found in forests, shrublands and wetlands in the wild.


What Do They Eat?


African savanna elephants eat a few different things.


They eat grasses, plants and fruits.
