African Forest Elephants Are Now Critically Endangered šŸ˜

Elephants

There is sad news, as, African Forest Elephants are now critically endangered.

African Forest Elephants have just been declared critically endangered. When a species is declared critically endangered, it means that they are just one step away from becoming extinct in the wild and extinct.

Why Are They Critically Endangered?

African Forest Elephants are now critically endangered because they have seen a significant decline in their population.

They have seen a massive decline due to both poaching and habitat loss. Another Elephant species - the African Savanna Elephant - has also seen a massive decline in their numbers. The African Savanna Elephant has seen a 60% decline in their population. The African Forest Elephant population has sadly declined even more, as the African Forest Elephant population has declined by a massive 86%.

This decline has been over the course of 50 years.

What Is Their Population?

African Forest Elephants have became a critically endangered species on the IUCN Red List. The IUCN Red List does an excellent documentation of species of both plants and animals; they asses things like a species conservation status and the challenges and threats that species face today.

Both the African Forest Elephant population and the African Savanna population combined is estimated by the IUCN to be 415,000 Elephants.

Where Are They Found?

In the wild, African Forest Elephants are found in forests in some countries in Africa.

The Change In Their Status

The conservation status of African Forest Elephants has now changed significantly. Before, they were classed as a vulnerable species. By being a critically endangered animal now, these Elephants are now much closer to extinction than before.

The conservation status of species is:

. Not evaluated (EE)

. Data deficient (DD)

. Least concern (LC)

. Near Threatened (NT)

. Vulnerable (VU)

. Endangered (EN)

. Critically endangered (CR) - this is where African Forest Elephant are

. Extinct in the wild (EW)

. Extinct (EX)
