31 species have just been declared extinct by the IUCN.
Today, it is thought that we are living in a sixth mass extinction event, where species of plants and animals are dying off much faster than the natural rate.
This is also causing a biodiversity crisis.
The biodiversity crisis that we are seeing has sadly just seen more species becoming extinct. Most of the 31 species which have just been declared extinct are small animals. These include 17 different species of freshwater fish and 3 different species of frogs from central America. Other species of frogs are also newly extinct.
Smaller species like frogs and fish are important for ecosystems.
