What Is Upcycling?
Upcycling is when we take something old and recreate something new with it.
It is a creative way to reuse things that we either no longer want, or no longer use, instead of throwing them out. By creating something new out of something old, we can help stop waste, pollution and carbon emissions.
How Does It Help The Environment?
When we reuse something to give it another purpose, or another look, then we can help the environment by reducing what we buy.
Reducing the materials that we use can help us to reduce the amount of destruction caused to the earth.
For example, if we have something made out of wood and we no longer want or need that thing, then using the wood to create something new can help us to stop waste and more consumption. When we buy new wood, forests - including tropical forests - were chopped down so that we could have that wood.
The materials that make up the things we buy came from the earth, if we reduce the amount of things that we buy and reuse the things that we already have to create something new with them, then we can help reduce the destruction and pollution which is caused to the planet.
Having A New Creative Outlook
Upcycling also gives us an opportunity to have a new creative outlook.
Instead of throwing things out, it's good to ask ourselves 'Is there anything I could create with this and change it into something new?'
Creating something new from something old is art; it is fun to create new things out of old things and allows you to be creative.
What If You Can't Upcycling?
If you can't upcycle things because you have no time, or, you have things that you no longer need, then why not give these things a new lease of life by taking them to a charity shop? That way, someone else can get use out of it.
Taking things you no longer need to a charity shop also reduces waste and gives someone else the opportunity to use them.
Upcycling things is rewarding as it is creative and helps the environment.
