What Are China's Wet Markets? And, How Can You Help Ban Them?

Wet markets have gotten the world's attention during recent months due to the coronavirus outbreak. This is because it is believed that the coronavirus started in a wet market in China.

This isn't the first time that something like this has happened, it is believed that the avian flu and SARS also started in wet markets. Therefore, wet markets are a danger to human life and health.

But, they are not only a danger to humans, they are also a danger to animals. Wet markets are cruel on animals because live animals of every kind, from chickens, cats, dogs, rodents and even wild animals like snakes and so on, are kept in tiny, unsanitary cages in the wet markets while still living. These unsanitary environments are a breeding ground for new viruses.

Like we have seen with the new coronavirus.

Wet market seem similar to factory farms in the western world. In factory farms in the western world, farm animals are often kept in tiny, cramped and unsanitary cages, much like we see with wet farms. Factory farms in the western world have also been responsible for virus outbreaks, two examples of these in recent times were swine flu and mad cow disease.

The way that we treat animals, not only affects the lives of those animals, but it also affects the lives of humans too. Our neglect and abuse of animals in factory farms and wet markets has resulted in the following outbreaks across the world: 1) mad cow disease, 2) swine flu, 3) SARS, 4) Avian flu and 5) the new coronavirus, COVID 19.

It seems that when animals are kept in unsanitary conditions and cramped into tiny cages it becomes a breeding ground for many of the viruses and diseases that we have seen outbreaking over the last few decades. Therefore, for the sake of human health, compassion towards animals and preventing other outbreaks of viruses and diseases in the future, we should ban places like wet markets to stop this thing from happening again in the future?
