They are one of the most unique animals in the animal kingdom, with their unmistakable orange and black stripes, which makes these big cats easy to identify.


But like most cats, tigers are elusive animals. Their elusive nature - and their stripy fur coat - makes it hard for people to spot these big cats when they are in the wild. Tiger stripes are so unique to each individual tiger that all tigers will have their own unique stripes. Tiger stripes are as unique as human fingerprints.

The Bengal tiger is the national animal of both India and Bangladesh.

The national animal of Malaysia is the Malayan tiger.

The national animal of South Korea is the Siberian tiger.

These beautiful big cats can grow to be 10 to 11ft in length. This means that if tigers could stand, they would be taller than any human to walk on earth, as the tallest human on record was a massive 8ft and 11 inches - an adult tiger is about 1ft or 2ft longer than the tallest ever human, which shows how big these cats are.

Tigers are one of the most endangered animals in the world. Some subspecies of tigers are critically endangered today.


Tigers are iconic for their endangered status.


As an endangered species, the population of tigers is so low today that there are less than 4,000 individual tigers in the wild; it is estimated that there are around 3,900 tigers living in the wild today. It is estimated that there are 5,000 tigers in captivity in the USA, which means that there are more tigers in captivity in the USA today than there are in the wild of the the tigers natural habitat.


1 The Extinct Tigers

Sadly, many species and subspecies of tigers are already extinct.


Many of these tigers went extinct a long time ago, such as trinil tiger (which was thought to have went extinct about 50,000 years ago), the longdan tiger, the wunhsien tiger, the Bornean tiger and the ngandong tiger.


Other species of tigers that have became extinct, have only became extinct during the last several decades. The tigers that have become extinct in the last several decades are the Bali tiger (which became extinct in the 1950s), the Caspian tiger (which became extinct in the 1970s), and, the Javan tiger (which also became extinct in the 1970s). In total, 8 tiger species/subspecies have become extinct.


It is interesting that there have been so many species of tigers.
