We often hear of the human cost of the coronavirus, but the animal cost of the coronavirus is hidden under the radar - this situation is affecting animals just as much as people.
This is because animal charities are being affected because of the virus.
Several different animal charities need our help as they are seeing a decrease in their funding right now because of the ongoing lockdown. The SSPCA, Scotland’s leading animal charity, has seen a 20% decline in their funds because of the lockdown. Likewise, the RSPCA, which is England’s leading animal charity, has also seen a decline in their funding because of this lockdown. Animal charities are suffering from a decline in their funds because of the lockdown.
It’s not just animal charities which are suffering because of the lockdown, wildlife charities are also facing a similar fate right now. WWF UK has had to cancel all of its fundraising events, which means that they need people to support their charity ‘’now more than ever’’.
The Wildlife Trusts has also been facing its own problems because of the lockdown. The problems that the Wildlife Trusts are facing include - them being unable to protect endangered species/the potential loss of endangered species like Dormice, wildflower meadows facing deterioration, and important conservation work being put on hold because of the lockdown.
The RSPB has also suffered because of the lockdown. Sadly the lockdown has resulted in the RSPB having to stop ‘’vital conservation work’’ while also taking a hit financially.
The lockdown is having a detrimental effect on the country's animal charities and wildlife charities and as a result, will be having a detrimental effect on animals and wildlife the country over. We can end the detrimental effect that it is having by lifting the lockdown, we could have a more balanced approach to this virus by shielding the most vulnerable, protecting people's freedoms, jobs, and liberties, while also protecting animals and wildlife by restoring normality to a great degree.
