The cute Eastern Barred Bandicoot has been brought back from the brink of extinction!
The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is one of the species of Bandicoots. Bandicoots are cute animals that are found in the wild in Australia and New Guinea.
The Eastern Barred Bandicoot has only been found in Australia in the wild, they are native to the state of Victoria in Australia and the island of Tasmania.
Eastern Barred Bandicoots were classed extinct in the wild in 1989 when only 150 Eastern Barred Bandicoots remained in the wild.
They have remained classed as extinct in the wild since then - until now.
The great news is that the conservation of these cute animals has changed.
The Eastern Barred Bandicoots conservation status has changed from being on the brink of extinction, to now endangered. While being an endangered species still does make these cute animals vulnerable, they have still made a great comeback from the brink of extinction, as their population has increased since 1989.
Today, the Australian government says that there are now over 1000 Eastern Barred Bandicoots - that's up from 150 bandicoots in 1989.
