COP26 Scotland Has 1 in 9 Species That Are Threatened With Extinction

Scottish Wildcats

The eyes of the world are on Scotland due to the COP26 event being held there.

So, while COP26 is being held in Glasgow, the attention of the world right now is on Scotland. While Scotland is holding this climate summit, attention should be drawn to Scotland's declining biodiversity and its species threatened with extinction.

Cute Red Squirrel

Today, Scotland is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world.

Scotland's destruction of nature is resulting in the natural world declining faster in Scotland than anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

It has sadly also resulted in 1 in 9 species in Scotland being threatened with extinction today. This includes species like the Scottish Wildcat.

Beautiful Scottish Wildcat

The Scottish Wildcat is Scotland's most endangered species today. It is estimated that there are as few as only 35 Scottish Wildcats: this sadly makes these beautiful and unique cats incredibly close to extinction.

Scottish Wildcats are now critically endangered today.

The loss and destruction of forest habitat is a major reason why Scottish Wildcats are heading towards extinction today. The Scottish Government proposing to clear forest to build wind farms is threatening the last remaining Scottish Wildcats.

Sadly, Scottish Wildcats are not the only species in Scotland that are threatened with extinction today. Other animals threatened with extinction today in Scotland include other mammals, such as - the Capercaille and the Red Squirrel.

Smaller species are also declining: 25% of Scotland's moths have disappeared.

Even common garden wildlife species are declining. Since 2000, Hedgehogs in Scotland have severely declined. When even common species like Hedgehogs are declining: this shows the damage that we are doing to our wildlife.

COP26 is an opportunity to draw attention to Scotland's nature and how we are failing it. Environmental legislation has been devolved to the Scottish Parliament for over two decades now. The current SNP government have been responsible for environmental legislation for the last 14 years, past Scottish governments and the current SNP government have failed nature and have been instrumental in its destruction in Scotland.

Destroying nature, is destroying the environment and climate. The current Scottish Government has to start taking the preservation and protection of our natural world seriously. Right now however, they are failing to do so, and Scotland's nature is declining on their watch as a consequence. The question is - will the Scottish Government keep allowing Scotland's nature to be destroyed, or, will they start to preserve nature and work towards a world where we stop destroying the natural world? It is action, not words, which matter when it comes to preserving nature.
