It is day 2 of the Action For Earth Christmas advent calendar.
And, in the Action For Earth advent calendar day 2, we are celebrating and raising awareness about European Turtle Doves.
European turtle doves are cute and loving birds. They are found throughout most of Europe, some of the Middle East and, parts of Northern Africa.
Despite being found in all these areas, sadly these cute birds are vulnerable to extinction. Their population isn't doing great in the UK either.
European turtle doves are even rarer in the UK, their conservation status in the UK is red, which means that these birds are at risk of extinction in the UK.
Turtle doves are one of the rarest birds, and animals in the UK today. There are only 3,600 breeding pairs of turtle doves in the UK today. Sadly, turtle doves are also seeing big declines in the United Kingdom.
They are not found throughout most of the UK, and today, are only found in South- East England during the summer.
They are passage birds today in coastal areas of Scotland, and Orkney and Shetland.
Sadly, turtle doves are the fastest declining bird in the UK, and seen a 51% decline between 2013 and 2017.
