A Profile: The Aye-Aye



The Aye-Aye is a charismatic little animal that is found on the island of Madagascar.


Madagascar is known for its unique wildlife that lives within their rainforest. The Aye-Aye is one of those unique animals, as these nocturnal mammals are only found in Madagascar.


What Type Of Habitat Are They Found Within?


Aye-Ayes are mainly found down the East of the island of Madagascar. Though, they are also found in pockets in the North and West of the island.


These animals are mainly found in the rainforest and shrublands.


What Do These Animals Eat?


Aye-Ayes are omnivores. Therefore, they eat a variety of foods which consists of both plants and animals. They will eat things like seeds, fungi and fruits in the wild.


They will also eat insect larvae.


What Is The Mating Season And Mating Like For Them?


Many animals mate at a specific time of year, and only at a specific time of year. However, Aye-Ayes don't do that: they don't have a specific time of year that they mate.


This means that these animals will mate at any time of the year.


Once female Aye-Ayes are mature, they will give birth to young every 2-3 years.


What Type Of Animals Are They?



Aye-Ayes are mammals. They are also primates that mostly live in trees.


What Is The Conservation Status Of These Animals?


Sadly, Aye-Ayes are endangered today. But it was once thought that these animals were extinct in the 1930s; they were rediscovered again in the wild in the late 1950s.


What Is Their Population Trend Today?


Sadly, their population is decreasing today.


Aye-Ayes are thought to have declined by 50% (possibly more), in the last 3 decades.

Although these animals are endangered, it is not known what their population is today.


Fun Fact About The Aye-Aye


The Aye-Aye is not the only species of Aye-Aye to exist in the world. The Giant Aye-Aye was a species that also lived in Madagascar, they have been extinct for hundreds of years though.
