Squirrel Appreciation Day is on every 21st of January, and is a fun way to help show your appreciation and love for Squirrels!
Squirrel Appreciation Day was started by a wildlife rehabilitator called Christy Hargrove. The day was created by Christy for people to show their appreciation for Squirrels. It was also created as a day for people to help Squirrels - such as helping them by providing them with food.
The Squirrel is a member of the Sciuriade family, these include animals such as: Chimpmunks, Marmots, Flying Squirrels, Ground Squirrels and Prairie Dogs, all of these animals are related.
Squirrels are found all around they world. They are found in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia. There are different species of Squirrels around the world: such as the Grey Squirrel which is native to the Americas, and the Red Squirrel which is native to Eurasia.
How Long Do Squirrels Live In The Wild?
Squirrels are a very adaptable and resilient animal. They flourish just as well in urban settings, as they do in rural settings, which isn't something that most wild animals can accomplish.
Each species of Squirrel has a different lifespan in the wild, some of them live longer lives than other Squirrels. Squirrels in the wild can live for a surprisingly long time - Squirrels in the wild can live for up to 20 years.
Other species of animals in the Sciuriade family do not live as long though. Chimpmunks are a good example of this. For example, Eastern Chimpmunks only live an average of two to three years in the wild.
What Do Squirrels Eat While In The Wild?
Squirrels do eat the food that they are most associated with: nuts.
Squirrels are mainly herbivores. They eat other things besides nuts, such as fruit like berries, and vegetation found in the wild - such as fungi.
How Can You Help Squirrels?
There are several ways that you can help Squirrels.
One good way to help Squirrels is by showing your appreciation of Squirrels today on social media, with the hashtag #SquirrelAppreciationDay
You can also help Squirrels in the garden, by providing them with food like nuts and berries, and by providing them with a shallow bowl of water. With your bowl, put a small stick or something in it as a way for small animals to climb out of the bowl if they fall in it.
