2019 was the second warmest year on record, according to a new report.
Globally, 2019 was the second warmest year on record. Records about the global average temperature began all the way back in 1880.
The warmest year on record was 2016. Although 2016 is still the warmest year on record since records began, the difference between the average global temperature in 2016 was not that different from the average global temperature that was recorded in 2019 - there was only 0.04c difference between both years, therefore, 2019 was almost as warm as 2016.
Two of the world's continents also seen their second warmest year on record. 2019 was also the second warmest year on record for Europe. While 2019 was also the second warmest year on record for South America.
This report comes after several heatwaves in the Northern hemisphere and the Southern hemisphere during 2019, while also 2019 resulted in a massive 400 records being broken during the Summer of 2019 in the Northern hemisphere.
It doesn't stop there. This year, 2020 is set to be one of the hottest years on record. There could be even more records broken in 2020.
