How Many Species Of African Rhino Are There?
There are two main species of African Rhino. One of the species of African Rhino is called the 'Black Rhino', and the other species of African Rhino is called the 'White Rhino'. The White Rhino in Africa has two subspecies - The Northern White Rhino and the Southern White Rhino.
The Black Rhino Subspecies
Today, there are three living subspecies of African Rhinos: The Southern-Central Black-Rhino, The South Western-Black Rhino and The East African Black Rhino. The Southern Central Black-Rhino is the subspecies of African Rhino with the most numerous and healthiest population out of the three subspecies of African Rhino.
Although the Southern Central Black-Rhino is the most numerous out of the three subspecies of Black Rhino, they are still in danger of extinction: The Southern Central Black-Rhino is currently critically endangered. However, on a more positive note, their population numbers are increasing.
The South-Western Black Rhino is currently listed as a Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. The positive news is that the South-Western Black Rhino population is increasing, however, they are still vulnerable to extinction.
And finally, the last subspecies of Black Rhino is the East African Black Rhino (or the Eastern Black Rhino). These animals are currently critically endangered, however, there is some positive news for the East African Black Rhino: the population of the East African Black Rhino is increasing.
Have There Been Other Species of Black Rhino?
There have been other subspecies of Black Rhino, however, they are now all extinct. The last subspecies of Black Rhino died in 2011 - the Western Black Rhino was declared extinct in 2011. The Western Black Rhino was a subspecies of Black Rhino.
There have also been many other subspecies of Black Rhino.
