Scotland Must Take Urgent Action In The Next 12 Months If It Is To Meet Its 2045 Climate Change Goal

Climate Change

A new report by the Committee on Climate Change says that Scotland will have to take urgent action over the course of the next 12 months if it is to meet its 2045 climate change goals.

The Scottish government has proposed to be net neutral on carbon by 2045, to tackle climate change. However, the Committee on Climate Change has said that there would need to be new ambitious actions taken by the Scottish government if Scotland is to achieve these goals. The committee has said what happens in Scotland over the next year will determine if Scotland meets its net zero carbon emissions target.

The ambitious actions that the Scottish government would have to take to meet its net zero carbon emissions target would have to reach all areas of Scotland’s economy.

How Does Climate Change Affect The Whole Economy?

Climate change isn’t just a result of carbon emissions coming from vehicles, planes or houses, it comes from every part of our economy. That includes the fashion industry and the agriculture industry. If Scotland is to become carbon free by 2045, then how does it change the fashion industry and the agriculture industry to become environmentally friendly? And what about imports coming into the country - would it stop palm oil products coming into the country (as they destroy the rainforests in Indonesia and contribute to climate change), and what about imports in general (as they are being transported by fossil fuels from around the world), and finally, what about flights from Scotland (going net zero would mean ceasing all emissions, you can’t do that unless you stop flights)? All of these questions have to be answered if Scotland is to meet its climate change goals.
