The Aquatic Warbler is one of Britain’s rarest birds. The Aquatic Warbler is threatened with extinction.
The Aquatic Warbler is threatened with extinction, both in the UK, and across Europe, due to their low population and also due to their habitat being lost because of human destruction.
Across Europe, there are estimated to be between 10,000 and 14,000 of these (male) birds left in the wild. They are mostly found in countries like Germany and Poland in Europe. However, these animals are also found in the United Kingdom.
There is a very small population of Aquatic Warblers found in the Southern part of the British Isles. The population of Aquatic Warblers in the UK is so small, that there are only 42 Aquatic Warblers which are found in the United Kingdom.
Due to their very low population in the UK, makes these birds vulnerable to extinction, and also makes them one of the country’s most rarest wild animals.
Aquatic Warblers and the IUCN
The IUCN - an organisation which monitors the population of wild animals and plant species - lists Aquatic Warblers as being a ‘vulnerable’ species. This means that the Aquatic Warbler is vulnerable with extinction.
If the population of these birds continues to decline, it will mean that they become classed as an ‘endangered’ species by the IUCN - the endangered status of a species comes after the vulnerable status of a species. This is how the IUCN rates species:(NE): Not Evaluated (DD): Data Deficient (LC): Least Concern (NT): Near Threatened (VU): Vulnerable(EN): Endangered(CR): Critically Endangered (EW): Extinct in the Wild(EX): Extinct As you can see, the Aquatic Warbler is threatened with extinction due to them being classed as ‘Vulnerable’.
These wild birds could become endangered in the near future, as the IUCN also states that the population of these little birds is decreasing. The last time the population of the Aquatic Warbler was monitored and studied was in 2016.
The Habitat Of Aquatic Warblers
Aquatic Warblers can be found in wetlands.
Total Population Of Aquatic Warblers
In the UK, there are 42 Aquatic Warblers. However, throughout Europe, there are between 10,000 and 14,000 male Aquatic Warblers. In total, there are between 22,000 and 32,000 individual Aquatic Warblers across Europe today.
What Are The Threats These Animals Face?
One of the main threats that these animals face, is the destruction of their natural habitat.
The destruction of their natural habitat is resulting in these birds declining throughout Europe.
These birds, like many other birds and wild animals, are also threatened with climate change. They are threatened by climate change due to climate change causing droughts in their habitats - which means that their wetland habitats are changing; the water is disappearing. Droughts occuring affect the food supply in these little birds; as droughts persist, food can become scare for wild animals - including birds.
What Do Aquatic Warblers Look Like?
Aquatic Warblers look like female Sparrows.
