Earth Hour 2019 is just over 2 months away!
The theme for Earth Hour 2019 is 'connect 2 Earth'. The theme centers around promoting a healthier planet Earth. This year, it's all about promoting and encouraging a healthier planet, clean air, clean water and 'good food.' For this to happen, we need to have a planet, and a natural world which is healthy.
Earth Hour says:
''Healthy nature makes our life better by providing us good food, clean air, and fresh water - but it is all under the threat of climate change. Our #Connect2Earth campaign aims to raise awareness on the important role of nature in our lives and the benefits nature provides, from good food, clean air, fresh water, to so much more.''
When we don't have these essential things - clean food, water and air - then our quality of life is affected. It is essential for our well-being, as well as the planets well-being, that we have a healthy planet and natural world. We are not separate from nature: we are part of it. Our very existence depends upon the natural world.
A healthy natural world is also essential for ecosystems, and therefore animals. Climate change threatens the existence of ecosystems across the world. These include: forests, oceans, seas, other marine ecosystems and grasslands. With rising temperatures, ecosystems such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Arctic circle is threatened: this also threatens the wild animals that are within such ecosystems. With rising temperatures caused by climate change, and the erosion of fresh water and clean air; wild animals are at risk of extinction.
It is also something which affects us. It affects the quality of air we breath. Pollution today kills millions of people each year. A failure to reduce pollution, will only make matters worse in the future.
The good news: is, that governments and businesses are starting to take this issue more seriously. Governments in recent years have began to tackle issues such as climate change, and pollution: specifically the pollution which comes from plastic. Businesses are also doing the same. More and more businesses have been starting to reduce plastic, which is an important move to tackling pollution.
With changes coming from governments, businesses and people, we are making positive progress when it comes to tackling climate change and pollution. We are also making progress in creating a healthier and cleaner World. However, there is more to be done.
Earth Hour gives us to opportunity to make the positive change. It highlights the challenges that our natural world faces. But, Earth Hour also reminds us, and shows us, that when we come together, we can act to make positive changes for the planet, wildlife and ourselves.
This years Earth Hour takes place on the 30th of March 2019.
