The Amur Tiger

The Amur Tiger is one of the worlds rarest animals.

They are also one of the rarest Tiger subspecies; but not the rarest Tiger subspecies. The rarest Tiger subspecies is the Sumatran Tiger: which only has around 300 individuals remaining in the wild today. Although the Amur Tiger is not as vulnerable to extinction as the Sumatran Tiger, they do not fair much better.

The Amur Tiger population makes them one of the worlds rarest animals. As of 2019, the Amur Tiger population stands at around 540 individuals, according to the WWF. Although the Amur Tiger population makes them vulnerable to extinction; these animals were literally brought back from the brink of extinction.

By around the mid 20th century, the Amur Tiger population was so low, that there were only 40 individual Tigers remaining in the wild then. Through successful conservation work, these Tigers have been brought back from the brink of extinction, to have a much healthier population. Regardless of that: the Amur Tiger is still endangered, and therefore, they are still vulnerable to extinction.

The Threats Facing The Amur Tiger

There are many threats that these animals face, which makes them vulnerable to extinction. One of the main threats that the Amur Tiger faces, is: habitat loss. Like many other animals, a significant threat to the Amur Tigers existence is a loss of their habitat. In this case; it is a loss of their forest home. Amur Tigers live in the forest. But that forest is being destroyed for a variety of reasons, which are all linked to human activity. The forest is being destroyed because of: logging, agriculture, roads going through the forest, mining, forest fires, and the expansion of human settlements over the forest.

A loss in habitat, means that less Tigers can survive in the natural world. It also can result in these animals being killed, when the forests are cleared. Protection their habitat is essential for this species survival. Without preserving their forest home, they will not survive.

Where Do Amur Tigers Live?

Amur Tigers live in forests in China and Russia. There is also the possibility that these animals live in North Korea.

How Big Are They?

Amur Tigers can grow quite big. They can grow to around 10 feet.
