A new law could see pet theft being made illegal.
Tomorrow, the 26th of October 2018, politicians in the House of Commons will debate the Pets Theft Bill. The Pets Theft Bill will have its second reading tomorrow in the UK parliament before it progresses on. Bills in the House of Commons have three readings before they are voted on. The vote decides on whether or not Members of Parliament (MPs) agree to the bill. If the MPs favour the bill, that bill will then go on to a second chamber, the House of Lords, before it is enacted as law.
Therefore, there is some way to go yet on the Pets Theft Bill.
However, you can contact your local MP to support the bill. Asking your local MP to support bills like this can help them pass, as public support for a law to come into force, can help bring that law into force.
This is a summary of the Pets Theft Bill here.
A Bill to amend the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 to make the theft of pets an offence; to apply certain post-conviction powers under those Acts to such an offence; and for connected purposes.
