The African Rhino

The African Rhino is one of the two different species of rhino. The other species of rhino is the Asian Rhino.

The Asian Rhino has two subspecies of Rhino. They are known as the Southern White Rhino and the Northern White Rhino. The Southern White Rhino and the Northern White Rhino, are two subspecies of rhino which are critically endangered.

The Southern White Rhino is fairing better, as the Northern White Rhino is now all but extinct. The last Northern White Rhino male, died yesterday. There are only two Northern White Rhinos left, both of them are female. This means that unless science can save this species, they will become extinct in our lifetime.

African Rhino Subspecies

There are two African Rhino species. They are the Black Rhino and the White Rhino.

The African Rhino Habitat

The African Rhinos live in areas such as savannahs, woodlands, forests and wetlands.

Conservation Status

They are critically endangered

The Black Rhino

The Black Rhino is an endangered species, there are only between 5,000 and 5,400 of them left in the wild.

They are found in Southern and Eastern Africa. They remain critically endangered, are at real risk of becoming extinct.

The White Rhino

The White Rhino has two subspecies of rhino, the Northern White Rhino and the Southern White Rhino.

The Northern White Rhino is almost extinct, which means this species survival relies on the Southern White Rhino.

The Southern White Rhino is classed as Near Threatened. There are thought to be around 20,000 in the wild.

The Picture For African Rhinos

The picture for African Rhinos looks more optimistic than the picture for Asian Rhinos, as there are more African Rhinos.

However, African Rhinos are still critical. Saving this species of animal comes down to two main things. To save this animal, a) we must stop these animals from being poached in the wild, and b) we must help protect their habits from being destroyed.

These rhinos are particularly vulnerable to poaching, by being killed for their horns. It's something that could end up seeing the rhino becoming extinct. But, it's not the only thing that could see this species become extinct - habit destruction could too.

The rhinos have been squeezed into small pockets of forests, or grasslands, because of their habitat being destroyed. Humans have destroyed the forests and grasslands that the animals rely on, which makes it hard for this species to live in the wild.
