Sadly, Hedgehogs are one of the wild animals, that are fast declining. Hedgehogs are declining so fast, that they are declining at the same rate as Tigers. This is alarming, as these animals were once very common.

Today, however, hedgehogs are becoming more scarce. As each year passes, fewer and fewer people are seeing hedgehogs in their garden.

#2 Hedgehog Numbers

Now that you know our Hedgehogs are declining fast, you will want to know how many of them there are. In the 1950s, it was estimated the there was 36.5 million, today it is now thought that there is little under 1 million left. Which is an alarming drop for these wild animals.

#3 Hedgehog Sightings

Hedgehogs are one of our most common wild animals, yet, only 12% of people see Hedgehogs regularly. This is according to a recent report on the wild animals. And around half of the people never saw one.

#4 Dramatic Decline In 15 Years

Around 30% of the Hedgehog decline has only happened in the last 30% The decline of these wild animals, has happened in both in rural and urban areas. One of the big reasons for their decline in both rural and urban areas, is a lack of access to gardens.

When hedgehogs can't have access to gardens, it means that the get can't get access to food. Which obviously contributes to the animals decline.

#5 Hedgehogs Deserve To Be A National Treasure

Hedgehogs deserve to be a national treasure. As do all our wildlife. Not just because they are cute and iconic. But, also because of their resilience. Hedgehogs roamed the British Isles alongside Sabre Tooth Tigers and Wolly Mammoths. ​Yet, they outlived both of them. Humanity cannot be responsible for their ultimate demise; their extinction.
