Helping garden birds through the seasons is important. They require our kindness and compassion to help them. From putting out food and water, to putting up bird boxes, there are many ways that you can help garden birds. Helping these animals is a joy. You get to experience them in your garden, watching them, while they get food, water and shelter. It's a win-win for everyone. With he Big Garden Birdwatch just around the corner, there are many ways that you can help garden birds. We are going to look at five ways which you can help British garden birds.

1. Put Out Food Feeding the birds is one of the best ways which you can help these animals. There are many things that you can feed them, such as nuts, seeds and fat balls. You can buy bird food from your local stores or supermarkets. Usually, the bigger shops or pet shops will have bird food. But, you can also find bird food online, at stores such as Amazon. When you put wild bird food in your garden, be mindful of two things. The first is, put the bird food in a feeder. Again, you can buy feeders in shops, or online.

Buy the right feeder, for the right bird food. There are different feeders for wild bird food. The second thing to keep in mind is, keep it high up, on a tree branch, or a bird feeder. This stops birds from being easily vulnerable to cats.

2. Water Having a water fountain in your garden for the birds is a great way to help them survive. Just like food, birds need water to survive. You can buy bird baths in garden stores, or online. A simple bird bath in your garden will help most birds. You can also put a dish of water for birds which eat from the ground, such as Blackbirds. Birds like Blackbirds will drink off the ground.

Like your bird feeders, clean out your birdbath frequently. This stops the birds from becoming unwell. Think of it like washing your own plates and cups, you'd wash them, and birds are no different. 3. Bird Homes Just like you and me, birds need somewhere to live. There are birdhouses that you can buy to give your feathered garden find a home. As habitats shrink for wild animals, including birds, it becomes more important that we not only put bird feeders in our gardens, but also bird homes.

One or two bird homes in your garden can make such a big difference! 4. Garden friendly Become garden friendly. By this we mean, keep your local wildlife in mind when gardening. Plant flowers and plants which are helpful to species such as birds. Avoid plants or flowers which maybe poisonous to them. And, make sure that you plant hedges. Hedges are extremely beneficial to many wild animals, including birds. Also, when you are become garden friendly, avoid things such as pesticides, or any other toxic chemical. These are often harmful to wildlife, so try and take the organic route! 5. Your cat If you have a cat, then do two things. Put a bell on your cat. By putting a bell collar on your cat, you give the chance for the birds to hear them, and therefore escape before the cat attacks.

Another thing you could consider is putting your bird food and water off the ground, that way, the birds have a chance to escape from the cat. Cats are awesome and everything...just not to birds. These are five ways that you can help our feathered animal friends in the garden!
