Tigers are one of the worlds most iconic wild animals. Their orange fur and black stripes makes these big cats instantly recognizable.
Sadly, these gorgeous big cats are a symbol of endangered species.
Tigers themselves are today an endangered species. The WWF estimates that there are 3,900 Tigers remaining in the wild today. Although Tigers are vulnerable to extinction and have a low population, things have been looking up for these unique big cats recently, as last year India's Tiger population grew by 33% in the last four years - wild Tiger numbers grew last year to around 3,900. There is more good news for Tigers, as the WWF is committed to doubling the number of Tigers by 2022!
The Tiger population has already increased over the last decade. In 2010, the Tiger population was 3,200, since 2010 the Tiger population has risen to about 3,900 individual Tigers in the wild. Therefore, thanks to successful wildlife conservation efforts by charities like the WWF, we now have hundreds more Tigers in the wild than we did ten years ago, and hopefully, through more successful wildlife conservation efforts, we will have even more Tigers in the wild than we do today in the near future.
