Mountain Lions are one of the most gorgeous animals on the planet. Unlike other big cats, such as Amur Leopards and Tigers, Mountain Lions are not endangered.
Instead, Mountain Lions are classed as being of ‘least concern’. Being of least concern means that these animals aren’t vulnerable to extinction, endangered, or critically endangered. Mountain Lions today still maintain a large geographic area of where they are present - Mountain Lions are found in the South West of the United States, and they are also found in Mexico and most other places throughout latin America.
The population of Mountain Lions varies between the different countries in the Americas. In the United States, there are thought to be between 20,000 and 40,000 Mountain Lions in the country. Quite a sizable percentage of those Mountain Lions live in California: there is estimated to be between 4,000 to 6,000 Mountain Lions living in California today.
Only some of California’s Mountain Lions will be protected, the ones which will be protected are the ones that live in Southern California. These protections are set to protect the populations of Mountain Lions within California which are most vulnerable to extinction.
There are only a few hundred Mountain Lions left in Southern California.
The protections would mean that Mountain Lions in the area would be protected by the US Endangered Species Act and that they would be protected from things like developments.
