Today is World Bee Day: Happy World Bee Day!
World Bee Day happens on the 20th of May each year.
It is a great day to celebrate one of the world's cutest and most important insects. It is also a great day to appreciate bees and raise awareness about them.
The main aim of World Bee Day is about raising awareness about the importance of bees in the world.
Bees are important for people, animals, plants and the environment, these important insects help to give us food and flowers.
Bees are responsible for pollinating most of the world's crops: bees help to pollinate crops like strawberries, tomatoes apples and much, much more.
It is thanks to bees that we have fruits and vegetables to eat. Other pollinators in the natural world - such as butterflies - are also important pollinators.
Sadly, bees in the world are declining.
In 2019 it was announced that a third of bees in the UK had declined. It was also announced recently that a MASSIVE 60% of flying insects in the UK had declined.
There are several main reasons for the decline in bees:
. Habitat loss and destruction
. Harmful chemicals like pesticides
. Climate change
These are some of the main reasons for the decline in bees.
How Can You Help Bees?
There are some ways that you can help bees.
One of the biggest ways that you can help bees, is by creating a wildlife-friendly garden. Creating a wildlife-friendly garden will also help other animals - such as hedgehogs and birds.
To create a wildlife-friendly garden for bees, you can do things like plant flowers, or even better, plant a mini-meadow in your garden.
Mini-meadows are great for other insects - including butterflies. Plus, mini-meadows are also beautiful, as you will get a sea of beautiful flowers in your garden.
Another great way that you can help bees (and other animals that come into your garden), is by not using harmful chemicals - chemicals like weed killers and slug pellets are harmful to other wild animals and bees.
Creating a garden with wildlife in mind can help animals and the environment. Creating wildlife-friendly gardens also gives wild animals and insects a home.
Finally, there is another way that you can help bees: if you see a bee lifeless on the ground, then you can help him or her by giving them some sugar water in a spoon or a shallow dish, you can also help the bee by placing some flowers next to them, this should hopefully give the bee some energy and they will fly away again!
There are many ways that we can help make the world a better place for bees, these are just some of the ways that you can help bees.
