There are new reports that the Amazon River Dolphin are now at risk of extinction.
But are they?
And why are these animals now thought to be at risk of extinction?
Amazon River Dolphins are at risk of extinction for several reasons. These reasons are 1) their population is decreasing, 2) Amazon River Dolphins were listed as endangered in 2018, and, 3) the 5-year moratorium that was protecting these animals has now run out.
It is the moratorium running out that is raising fears about the survival of Amazon River Dolphins. As, without the moratorium - which doesn't look like it is being renewed - the Amazon River Dolphin won't have the legal protections they have been given over the last 5 years, and, therefore, without the protections, these endangered animals could end up becoming critically endangered.
Or worse, they could even become extinct.
Although it's known that Amazon River Dolphins are in decline and endangered, it's not known how many of them are left in the wild today.
Therefore, it's hard to know how near extinction they are.
But, through having their protections taken away from them, and other risks to them - such as the loss of their habitat through deforestation - makes these animals at risk of extinction.
